Several promotional actions via the Internet were carried out in 2009
The Tourist Board of Arona and Google signed an agreement in 2009 to promote the municipality via optimization campaigns in this well-known search engine. The results were very satisfactory given that, over the course of 2009, a total of 57,672,971 advertisements for Arona were viewed, 1,735,386 in Google search results and 57,696,095 in the Google content network. In relation to the agreement itself, Arona's tourist web site, www.arona,travel, received a total of 132,271 visits, 65,301 via Google search engine results and 66,970 via visits to the Google content network.
Other actions for promotion via the Internet were also carried out in 2009. A promotional video was presented in the YouTube home page to mark Arona's presence in Fitur and the launch of its new tourism portal. The results could not have been better as the video was viewed more than 4 million times in a single day. In the MITT, a tourist fair held in Moscow in March, YouTube was also employed as a platform for the online promotion of the municipality.
Search engine optimization, analysis of results
The tourism portal, www.arona.travel, received 895,849 visits in 2009, which translates to more than 14 million viewed pages (14,261,566). Each user visited Arona's tourism web site for an average of 10 minutes and 14 seconds. The percentage of new visits rose to 43.66%.
Searches for tourist information relating to Arona in the Google search engine place the Turismo Arona official web portal at an average ranking of 3.1 over the course of 2009.
Attention should be drawn to the fact that the highest number of visits were received on the 28th of December, when almost 5000 (4965) visits were registered, the highest number over the course of 2009. December proved to be a month of rising results, with a total of 110,308 registered visits, almost as many as we received in March, which we can consider as the period when users began to familiarise themselves with www.arona.travel. In the month of March 119,487 visits were received.
In 2009, www.arona.travel received 391,457 visits from unique users (visits made by a single user).
The webcams proved to be the content that aroused most interest amongst users. The image provided by the town hall's camera at the Playa de Las Vistas proved to be the most popular over the course of 2009, receiving more than 6 million visits (6,229,609).
Technical profile of users
The majority of internauts who visited us employed Internet Explorer (74.31%), followed by Firefox (19.30%) in a distant second place. Other browsers such as Opera, Safari or Google Chrome were also used to access our web page; however, the percentages were much lower. It should be borne in mind that, depending on the browser used the web portal may be displayed slightly differently, in terms of borders and frames.
Geographical location and languages of users who visit us
The location of users who visit us is another factor that needs to be considered. With regards to language, the majority of users are English speakers, accounting for 28.31% (253,646) of the visits. They are followed by German speakers, with 138,978 (15.51%) visits; Spanish speakers, with 130,771 (14.60%) visits; Dutch speakers, with 78,785 (8.79%) visits; and Swedish speakers, with 36,365 (4.06%) visits.
The web portal was presented in French in September and could be accessed in Italian from the 1st of December onwards. The French accounted for 35,060 visits (3.91%), whilst Italians registered 34,043 (3.80%) visits.
The remainder was made up of Spanish visitors, registering 30,079 (3.43%) and the Finnish, who accounted for 24,640 (2.75%) visits.
Sources of traffic
Direct traffic (visits made directly to www.arona.travel) accounted for 43.26% of the visits 35.59% of the traffic came from other web sites (visits redirected via other sites: www.meteosurfcanarias.com, www.arona.org, www.webcamgalore.com, www.aronatour.ru, www.kanaren-virtuell.de, www.foxnews.com, www.wetteronline.com…).
20.15% of the traffic was redirected to www.arona.travel via search engines (Google, AOL, Yahoo, Bing, Msn…).
